11 things to do in Melbourne

Melbourne is one of the first cities I travelled to, and I enjoyed it so much I have been back 3 more times since. There is so much to see and do in this bustling city that it is easy to keep having new experiences each time I go.

If you are looking for things to do on your trip to Melbourne here are some suggestions.

Ride the City Circle tram

Trams are a bit of a novelty for me as we don’t have them in Perth, but they are also a really handy way to travel around town. Best of all the city circle tourist tram is completely free and will get you to almost anywhere you need to go within the CBD. For details on the tram route visit this website.

Visit Melbourne Museum

This museum is the largest in the southern hemisphere so it is easy to spend a few hours here. It also hosts the world’s largest IMAX screen which plays both documentaries and blockbusters.

Enjoy an AFL game at the MCG

Melbourne is a huge sporting city, and if you are able to catch a footy game while you are there it is quintessential Melbourne experience.

See the penguins at the SEA LIFE aquarium

Find some Laneway Street Art

Melbourne is very well known for the variety of street art down it’s many laneways. You won’t have to walk very far to find at least one or two cool pieces. For more suggestions of laneways to see visit Melbourne’s official website.

People watch at Federation Square

Federation Square is an open public space with heaps of spots to sit down and watch the world go by.

Tour Melbourne Park

If you aren’t in town for the Australian Open then you can still see the courts during a tour. They will show you the corridors that big names like Serena Williams and Roger Federer walk down just before their finals matches.

Try your luck at Crown Casino

There are options for everyone at the Crown complex, with so many delicious restaurants to eat at too. If gambling isn’t your thing you can also have some fun with bowling and arcade games.

Shop at Queen Victoria Markets

These markets have been operating for over 140 years, and have a huge variety of food, gifts and souvenirs on offer.

Visit the Australian Centre for Moving Images (ACMI)

Currently closed for redevelopment, but in the past this museum held some of the most interesting and interactive displays including Tim Burton and DreamWorks exhibits. The museum is due to reopen in late 2019 so any trips after this time should definitely include a look here. It is conveniently located in Federation Square too.

See a show or a concert

Melbourne is a hot spot for theatre and music events, as well as comedy and film festivals. No matter when you visit there is sure to be something to see for a great night out.

  2. Haven’t been to Melbourne yet but it’s definitely a city I want to visit when I get back to Australia. I’ll be keeping these tips in mind. The ACMI sounds interesting and wasn’t something I’d heard of already 🙂
