Bluff

One night in Bluff, Utah

During our road trip across America we spent a night in the beautiful Bluff, Utah. Bluff is a small town (population just over 300) located on the Colorado Plateau.

We were coming from Grand Junction and needed a place to stop overnight before heading off through Monument Valley the next day. I had been looking for accommodation in the area and came across the Desert Rose Resort & Cabins. The photos looked so stunning, I booked it immediately before even checking what else was nearby.

We drove into Bluff late in the afternoon, having just crossed over the Utah border following a day seeing the last of the Colorado landscape. Just as we crossed into Utah we drove through a thunderstorm and then a sandstorm so we were relieved to be finished driving for the day.

We checked into our hotel and the room was just as lovely as the pictures. It felt very cosy and comfortable.

We then drove over to the Trading Post which has the Navajo Twin Rocks in the background. They are so huge it is very impressive. The Trading Post has some unique gifts although they are a little costly. We also stopped at the only gas station in town to fill up.

For dinner there are only a few options so we decided to eat at Duke’s which is located on-site at the Desert Rose. I found it surprisingly fancy for a place in the middle of no-where. It was the kind of place that would fit right into any big city.

After dinner we went for a drive to try and find a lookout to watch the sunset. We couldn’t find anywhere particularly special to stop at so we just drove for a little while before turning around and watching the sun go down between the clouds.

We then went for a dip in the pool where you could see the amazing rock-face in the distance through the huge glass windows.

The following morning we woke up early and watched the sun rise over the little town. It felt really cool being literally in the middle of nowhere with nobody else around (except for one car that did hoon by and spoil the atmosphere!).

We then went to Comb Ridge Eat and Drink and got blue corn pancakes. It was probably the best breakfast of the whole trip!

We then had to pack up our room and head off. The desk staff were super friendly during check out and we were soon on our way to the Grand Canyon via the Valley of the Gods and Monument Valley.
