An evening at Elizabeth Quay

Elizabeth Quay is one of Perth’s newest entertainment precincts. It is built on what used to be open parkland on the edge of the Swan River, and was officially opened in January 2016.

Even though the Quay is now open to the public, most of the building lots nearby are still vacant with construction contracts still being negotiated. A few hotels (including the Ritz-Carlton!) are being constructed, some of which will be finished soon. In saying that it is still a lovely area to explore for an evening and provides a different option than heading into Northbridge.

We actually started our evening just outside the Quay at Petition‘s beer corner, on the corner of Barracks Street and St Georges Terrace. This is a great place to meet up with friends or a nice stop along the way if you are walking from the Perth Train Station.

After a few tasters of their delicious craft beers, we walked down to the Quay which takes about 7 minutes. We walked there just as the sun was setting and there was some spectacular lighting through the trees, made possible because of how much open space there still is at the moment.

For dinner we had burgers from V Burger Bar. We are big fans of the V Burger in Vic Park so it was awesome to see them open another shop in the city. The seating is open and relaxed with a few under cover bench tables or you can take your food and sit anywhere along the Quay.

I highly recommend the piggy fries! Although they are super filling and I struggled to finish the rest of my meal.

We then walked around the Quay which is a lovely stroll. There are lots of other people walking or riding around too so it has a nice atmosphere. Walking across the bridge gives a great view of the Swan River, as well as a the city skyline when looking back. It does remind me a lot of Darling Harbour in Sydney.

Once you have walked the whole loop around there is a Gusto Gelato stand for some dessert before you can make your way back home. They claim to offer the ‘best gelato outside of Italy’ and have vegan, gluten free and dairy free flavours.

If you don’t want to take the train there is parking nearby at the convention centre or the City of Perth Parking on Terrace Road. You could also come from South Perth on the ferry and see the Quay from the river.
