The great thing about packing for summer is that there is a lot less you need to pack! During our USA road trip I lived in t-shirts and shorts, so the majority of your wardrobe can be these items.
Being summer you are also going to want some bathers for dips in the hotel pool and sun protection like a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen.
For shoes I recommend sneakers for day time (especially if you are doing most of the driving) and a pair of sandals for the evening or by the pool.
Even though it will mostly be warm I do recommend one pair of jeans and a jumper in case you get a bit chilly. These work as clothes for the plane so you don’t need an extra item for your flight.
You will also want to take a backpack to contain all your car snacks and valuables, so that when you get out and walk around you can keep these close by instead of leaving them in the car. Road trips usually involve a lot of hikes and nature walks so a backpack is a much better idea than a purse or suitcase.
As always, don’t forget to pack socks and underwear – as many as you think you may need between washes and a pair of pyjamas.
- 5 or 6 t-shirts, can include one singlet
- 2 or 3 pairs of shorts
- Backpack/Day pack
- Jeans or Pants
- Socks & Underwear

This is pretty much exactly what I pack too! Layering is key.
